CASE STUDY CHAPTER 8 MWEB BUSINESS HACKED

1.   What technology issues led to the security breach at MWEB?

The technology issues are compromised subscribers account details, published logon and password details that were published on the internet by hackers and MWEB previous web based self-service management system outsource to Internet Solution not yet migrate to the new MWEB network. So the reason is hackers gained access to Web based Internet Solutions self-service management system and it led to security breach that MWEB don’t have total control.

2. What is the possible business impact of this security breach for both MWEB and its customers?

Possible business impacts for MWEB are:
i.                    They have to notifying all customers and find fast solution like contacting these customers to reset their passwords, as an added security measure.
ii.                  They have to work together with Internet Solution to solve this issue. They need to determine reason for breach and this leads to interruption of business processes.
iii.                They will lose trust of customers and takes time to gain back customer trust to company.
iv.                They need to immediately implement proper policies and controls of their systems.
v.                  They need to prepare for legal action and financial risks. This is threat to customer retention and reputation.
Possible impacts for MWEB customer are:
i.                    They need for explanation about the issue from MWEB.
ii.                  They need for behavioral recommendations when this issue happens.
iii.                They loss of personal information such as privacy. The data lost or is inaccurate.
iv.                They feel inconvenience because they have to change password or could not access the service.
v.                  They lost trust in the company because of disappointed.

3. If you were an MWEB customer, would you consider MWEB's response to the security breach to be acceptable? Why or why not?

MWEB’s response to the security breach is acceptable because they respond quickly to the incident, migrate the Internet solution self-service management system to new secure server, contacting their customer to reset their passwords, as an added security measure and advice for immediate action, investigate thoroughly this incident and provide solution and report. The result note that no personal information was lost and that none of MWEB’s clients suffered any losses as their usernames and passwords had been recreated and changed. MWEB also successfully repels 5000 attacks a day.

4. What should MWEB do in the future to avoid similar incidents?

To avoid similar incident, MWEB should implement up to date security system or devices or protocol to their network such as Digital certificates, Intrusion detection system, MIS audit, regular and thorough testing and improved identity management. Moreover, MWEB should working closely with Internet Solutions to investigate the nature and source of the breach to ensure hacked doesn’t happen again.

CASE STUDY CHAPTER 5 GREEN COMPUTING

1. What business and social problems does data center power consumption cause?

The business of data center cause is such as video on demand, maintaining web sites, analyzing large pools of transactions or social media data that require more and more power-hungry machines businesses. Besides that, the social problem that the data center power consumption cause is high corporate operating costs.

2.What solutions are available for these problems? Are they  people, organizational, or technology solutions? Explain your answer.

People, for example Acorda.
A $210 million-per-year maker of drugs to treat nervous disorders such as multiple sclerosis.
Installed motion sensors and invested in intelligent cooling system to boost energy efficiency at the new facility.
  Preparing to test virtualized desktops.

Organizational, for example Facebook
Publicly posted the specifications for the design of its data centers.
Facebook’s engineers modified the programming in the servers.

Technology, for example cloud computing system
Optimized for virtualization and for supporting as many different subscribing companies as possible.
Produce major savings when doing the computing for large numbers of companies.

3. What are the business benefits and costs of these solutions?

Reduce the human resources in data centre
- Virtualization in data centre helps to reduce the number of servers and storage resources in a firm's IT infrastructure.
-Make firm more energy- efficient
- Installed motion sensors will shut off light after five minutes if no movement is detected. This enable firm greatly reduce the power required to run workstation.
- Reduce corporate operating costs

- Intelligent cooling system will automatically changes setting of computer as the conditions change. intelligent cooling system helps the firm to save the electric supply and thus, reduce the operating costs.

4. Should all firms move toward green computing? Why or Why not?

-Yes.
-It is very efficient to reduce their power requirements
-Reduce costs
-Reducing impacts on environmental and human health
-Helps to minimize the energy consumption by educating consumers on efficient ways to keep power   usage low.

CASE STUDY CHAPTER 1 CASE 3 A NEW LOOK AT EMR

1-14 identify and describe the problem in this case.
High cost in health care industry.
      US
Many issues with the sharing of medical data between difference systems.
No nationwide software standards for organizing and exchanging medical information
Potential conflict of interest for the insurance companies involved in the creation of health record systems.
Insurers not interested to have electronic system.

1-15 What people, organization, and technology factors are responsible for the difficulties in building electronic medical record systems? Explain your answer.
       The currency problem
The cost of using electronic medical record is around $30,000 to $50,000 per doctor. In this case, it just only a small amount of funds are available up front. This would burden many providers.
Physicians and other health care workers is required
They need to retrain a doctor and it will waste a lot of time. A doctor may be spending a considerable of time entering your previous medical history to an electronic medical record.

1-16 What is the business, political, and social impact of not digitizing medical records (for individual physicians, hospitals, insurers, patients, and the U.S government)?
Difficult to get information or access of patient’s medical history, test results, diagnosis, treatments in a short time.
Impact the U.S government short term goals and a vision to have EMR systems in place by year 2015 as it could jeopardize their vision.
People expect advancement in medical technology with minimum reduced errors, non digitizing would risk the patient’s medical treatment as chance of errors are high.

1-17 What are the business and social benefits of digitizing medical recordkeeping?
Cost savings and increase health care quality
A physician would be able to immediately and directly access needed information from the EMR without having to pore through paper files.
Increase the effectiveness of medical recordkeeping
Electronic records will reduce medical errors and improve care, create less paperwork and provide quicker service.
Example: Veterans Affairs (VA) system .

1.18 Are electronic medical record systems a good solution to the problem of rising health care costs in the United States? Explain your answer.
Administrative tasks represent a significant percentage of health care costs.
Reduce medical errors and improve care, create less paperwork, and provide quicker service.
Doctor can communicate directly with pharmacy which is more convenient, cheaper for doctors and pharmacies, and safer for patients.
